Hi folks,
First of all thanks to Johan for his review of this show! He must have just got back when he mailed it! (Johan: what were you wearing? I saw a hell of alot of Dio shirts....) I was unfortunatley not able to get a camera in - one of my mates was to chicken to lob it over the fence.... and I also did not get to meet Ronnie.... :-) But anyway here's my little review of the show;
Soundcheck-----The intro tape (the old one) plays and the band comes on... Craig strikes...and...almost nothing!!! A quick pissed off look over at the soundguy and he was on (very unfortunate. The first of many mistakes) The started of with Eviluiton and by the end of Straight through the Heart Ronnie had the mix at a good level. (also after looking angry and pointing at the sky a few times) Also Simon Wright didn't make it through with out screwing up, Ronnie even said: "Thanks Simon" in a VERY sarcastic voice... they were not having fun... The the next few songs went well. The crowd started getting into it.
But as it happened some of them (as always) couldn't hold their drink. Over the fence (and me a few times) they went. I recieved a boot full in the face (lost a few drops of blood in the process, and my nose is now a lovely shade of Deep Purple - pun intended) but hey! This wasn't going to ruin my day - Hell this is Dio we're talking about here! So unfortunatley someone else (may he contact herpes) deciced to ruin it for all others. On tray went past Ronnie's head, and he muttered something like "F**k off, do that again...." angry look. (this was unfortunatley as pissed off as he looked in London, when some d**kweed threw a plastic beer cup at him. Then the b**tard throws antother one, and man did Ronnie explode! "F**k you, come up here and I'll kick you f**kin' ass, you asshole" (his actual words) He then went on to make gestures that the guy should come up at take a piece.... sad, sad, sad....
But even with al this going on (Ronnie needed up to the end of Stargazer to cool down) He came back and ROCKED. I mean you guys all know what I'm talking about - Whenever you see Dio in action - he blows your mind!!!!! It was also great to hear Rock 'n' Roll Children live and the King of Rock 'n' Roll. And Dio himself sounded even better voiced that the last time I saw him! He is truly the best. I really hope that he has an asshole free tour, comes back with Magica, and puts some songs from Dream Evil in the set-list. Craig Goldy sounded fantastic, but I think he can do with a little work on his stage presence (he stood there like Mr.G (no disrespect) but not enough flair and movement....
All in all a great Dio show screwed up buy a few guys who could take all that beer. It was once again an honour and privelige to see Mr. Dio at work again... and I will be waiting patiently for my next chance to catch the Rainbow (sorry, I meant catch the man in action.... I couldn't resist.) And to end on a good note: during the performance (the last 2-3 songs) someone passed a pen and a Dio jacket to him on stage - then people started to catch the drift - shirts, caps, jackets, LP's, etc.. all went on to the stage and Ronnie stood there during Mob Rules signing all this stuff whilst singing!! Unbelievable!! And juding from his looks Ronnie enjoyed it too... :-) (he did however 'lose' the pen when it got a bit out of hand !!!!!)
Speak to you all soon, take care,
Richard Beatty
